The topic of home schooling has become a very controversial topic, with very divided opinions. Due in large part to the size of the issue, and its controversial nature, there are a number of issues related to the home schooling debate. The major issues of this topic are presented below.
A key issue, embraced by both sides, is the quality of the child's education. The home school supporters cite the individual attention the child receives, comparable to having a private tutor, as opposed to public schools where there is very little personal attention. Those against home schooling cite concerns over most states' very lax requirements for home school teachers, that requires no expertise nor certification. (Romanowski, 2001)
The main argument against home schooling is that the child will not get enough socialization, and thus they will not be equipped to operate outside of the home. As we are moving into a more diverse culture, and diversity is eagerly embraced, the concern is that home school children will not be sufficiently exposed to alternate lifestyles. (Romanowski, 2001)
A benefit of home schooling is the additional time spent with the family, and the forging of those family relationships (Staelhe, 2000). The additional time spent together will help the child form more meaningful relationships later in life.
One of the key argument for home schooling is over family values. There are many objections, by the pro home school audience, to how values, and ethics, are being instilled in children. More importantly, the issues and items that are discussed in public school and how they are presented. Home schooling presents an avenue where values and ethics can be properly instilled, without the public school system hampering the teaching.
Another key argument for home schooling is the children's safety. As bullying continue to get worse, very little seems to be done by the public school infrastructure. Furthermore, with the growing prevalence of drugs, and the resulting influence, home schooling provides a forum to shelter children from this danger.
My position on the home school issue is that home schooling has numerous advantages over its public school counterpart. The main reason for this assessment is that home school students get lots of individual attention, more consistent with having a private tutor. Furthermore, a home school student can have their curriculum tailored to suit their learning style.
