Week 8: Assignment - Résumés and Job-Application Letters

Formatting didn't come through into the HTML perfectly, but I don't have the energy to correct.  I only got 81/90 on this assignment, I looked again at her rationale and it didn't seem to really make sense.  Whatever.

Mr. Horan

Dear Mike Horan:

I am applying for the Senior Windows System Administrator position as advertised on Monster (654321/inettech).  My unique experience and background make me an ideal fit for this position and for your company.

During my tenure at Northern Trust I was responsible for the Texas OU within the corporate Active Directory and its day to day administration.  I wrote a number of custom Group Policy Objects to work around a number of items that Microsoft did not provide a pre-built solution.  An example of this was making the drive letter appear first, rather than at the end, of mapped network drives.

Furthermore, while at Northern I migrated to the use of Alteris to create base images of the Windows 2003 install.  This allowed extremely rapid recovery of failed servers and simplified the rebuild process.  Furthermore, it allowed a more seamless integration of the new Windows patches and updated security information.

I have also recently written a VBScript that will deploy the latest Windows patches to all of the servers.  This has drastically reduced the amount of time it takes to deploy the latest set of patches.  Furthermore, it has eliminated the need for after-hours work for this deployment.

My extensive experience at Northern Trust has left me ideally suited for your Senior Windows System Administrator position.  I have enclosed a copy of my résumé for your review.  While it only covers a brief overview of my experience I would be happy to meet with you in person to discuss how I can best fulfill I-Net Technologies needs.

Sincerely,

Erik Smith

The main difference between the hardcopy and the online was the omission of my phone number and address.  My name and address was substituted out for “Confidential Résumé.”  My email address was already in the format of name@yahoo.com so that did not need to change.  Furthermore, the resume was done in Times New Roman font which is common to every computer and did not need to be changed for the online resume.  It was unclear where I should put the subject line for my online submission above, but the subject line is “Résumé—Erik Smith Sr. System Administrator.”
