 1909

 NAACP

 Was part of a coalition that founded the NAACP to immediately work to end segregation and discrimination.

 Booker T. Washinton

 

 1881

 Normal School for Colored Teachers (Tuskegee University)

 Founded what became Tuskegee University, and was a vocal advocate for blacks bettering themselves through education.

Huey P. Newton

 

 1966

 Black Panther Party

 Co-founded the Black Panther Party in to further the advancement of blacks by any means necessary.

 Malcolm X

 

 1960's

 Nation of Islam

 Functioned as the minister of the Nation of Islam and was a very vocal speaker on politics and the advancement of colored people.

 Martin Luther King, Jr.

 

 1954-1968

 Dexter Avenue Baptist Church

 An outspoken leader urging civil disobedience to accomplish change.  Heavily influenced by Mahatma Ghandi.  Organized the Montgomery bus boycott.

 Rosa Parks

 

 1955

 Refusal to give up a bus seat for whites.

 Became a major figure in the American Civil Rights movement with her very public arrest for being unwilling to surrender her bus seat to a white person.

 A. Philip Randolph

 1941

 March on Washington

 Planned a march on Washington to support the elimination of discrimination in defense industries.  Walk was called off when the desires were met by the Roosevelt administration met their requirements through an executive order.

The intent of the 15th amendment was specifically geared to allow colored people, and former slaves, the ability the vote.  Ultimately this gave blacks both recognition and a political voice that heavily contributed to desegregation.
