Week 6: Discussion Question 2
Spiritually, during and after the Black Plague there
was a growing skepticism of the Church due to their inability to banish
nor cure the disease. Many sought alternatives due this
disillusionment (Black death, n.d., Religion section, para.
1). Economically, the massive death tolls resulted in a severe
shortage of labor and contributed to a recession. Ultimately, the
shortage of labor probably spurned along capitalism as land owners had
to compete for scarce labor (Black death, n.d., Socio-economic effects
section, para. 3).
Due to the mood shift turning morbid and pessimistic
art reflected this (Black death, n.d., Other social effects section,
para. 1). In the visual arts painting tended to depict death or
dying as a theme. Literature, also had death as a theme as well
as there being numerous chronicled accounts of the plague.
