Week 8: CheckPoint - American Pop Culture

American culture has significantly impacted art throughout the world, and even more so that within the West. While the United States may not be on the avant-garde of new art styles, it is American acceptance of that art that frequently will define its success. Furthermore, with pop-art American influence becomes even more prevalent. With the massive corporate and media presence within the United States almost all pop-art imagery tends to reflect back directly on the United States.

With the site focusing almost completely on contemporary art the American influence is extremely significant. With themes covering seduction, personal drama, personal success, etc. these are all very strong themes emanating from the United States.

The shifting of other countries culture to that of another nation is not something new. What is new is that this is happening apart from the country being conquered, but is through media. The paradigm shift does make this a more palatable change because it is mostly passive. On the other hand it is still not a shift based on any good reason, and just serves as a de facto swap. Overall little good can come from this type of change as art begins to echo the same tune rather than a variety of different tunes.
